Putting faith into action with time, talents and resources has a long history at "First Church." You will find there are many ways and invitations to participate in the outreach ministries of our faith community.
Our Mission Committee allocates pledged dollars in support of a myriad of important local, state, national and international programs, through both our own directed gifts and the work of our denomination, the United Church of Christ. The Mission Committee also organizes both educational programs and several special offerings throughout the year that support specific projects and programs. One example of the scope of our involvement in recent years is the James Hospital in Colachel, India. For an in-depth picture of this mission, click here.
Our Christian Action Committee organizes a variety of short and long term service opportunities for both adults and youth in our congregation.
The JUMP office is open from 9 - 12 Monday to Friday every week.
Did You Know?
Most of us know that Wednesdays and Fridays, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., a small business is being run in our church basement called "The Possibility Shop." Quality articles of "previously owned" clothing and housewares are available for purchase at very modest prices.
Most of us also know that the proceeds from the Possibility Shop literally "make possible" capital improvements in the church's facilities which would otherwise require special fund raising. Our chapel renovation, for instance, was funded this way; so too the renovation of our office and the purchase of new computers.
Did you know, however, that the Possibility Shop also "makes possible" clothing and household goods for folks who could not otherwise afford them? Last year alone, for instance, nearly $3,000 worth of clothing items were given at no cost to clients of the JUMP program (Joint Urban Ministries). If that doesn't sound like a lot, consider that a good men's sports coat can be purchase for $2.50 (ask Rev. Lee to show you his) . . . then think again!
